چکیده

results linear mixed model analyses showed that athletes slept on average 43 minutes longer when they slept during usual (night) times than during abnormal (day) times. in general, sleep duration decreased during the race with on average 18 minutes per period. conclusions this pilot study shows that, even under extreme violation of sleep hygiene rules, there still is an apparent effect of circadian rhythm on sleep duration in relay race athletes. background sleep hygiene is important for sleep quality and optimal performance during the day. however, it is not always possible to follow sleep hygiene requirements. in multiday relay events, athletes have to sleep immediately after physical exertion and sometimes against their biological clock. objectives in this pilot study we investigated the effect of having to sleep at an abnormal circadian time on sleep duration. patients and methods eight runners and two cyclists performing a 500 km relay race were followed. they were divided into two groups that took turns in running and resting. each group ran four times for approximately five hours while the other group slept. as a result, sleep times varied between normal and abnormal times. all athletes wore actigraphs to record the duration and onset of sleep.

A circadian rhythm sleep disorder: melatonin resets the biological clock.

Circadian rhythm sleep disorders are poorly understood and often misdiagnosed. They are all related to the timing of sleep within the 24-hour day. This paper describes a patient with a long history of sleep disturbance whom we diagnosed as having delayed sleep phase syndrome by history and measurement of urinary melatonin metabolite excretion. Literature on the characteristics, diagnosis and ma...

The Impact of a Sleep Hygiene Intervention on Sleep Habits in Children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

BackgroundAttention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood. Up to 50% of these children suffer from at least one comorbid sleep disorder. Considering the deleterious effects of sleep problems on all aspects of children's life, this study was designed to investigate the impact of a sleep hygiene intervention on sleep habits in ch...

A chiming biological clock?

What is it famous for? Without doubt, the Tanaguchi Foundation’s major achievement was the funding of a cyclotron at Osaka University between 1937 and 1943. The construction of that facility was a major boost to Osaka University and enabled it to attract many young scientists to its new Physics department. One of the Department’s first Professors was Hideki Yukawa, the theoretical physicist who...
